About SMAK
SMAK Wines was established in 2018 by Fiona S. Mak, the first Asian woman from Hong Kong to own a winery in Washington State at a young age of 32.
At SMAK, we are fully committed to an exclusive Rosé production as we believe that Rosé is not limited to a summer-time wine. Rosé is as versatile to a winemaker as chicken to a chef, but often overlooked. By choosing a different variety and winemaking method, we can create a great range of Rosé and the possibilities of wines we can make are endless.
We want to drink Rosé all year round, just not the same Rosé! Each wine we created reflect the seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. Each of our still Rosé is made with a single varietal from a single vineyard source to showcase the high quality fruit sources Washington state has to offer. Let us share with you the different facets of Rosé we have explored! Our tasting room changes with the seasons as well, creating fitting atmospheres for our wines.
SMAK will bring you the ultimate Rosé experience. It is more than just wine, it is setting a sense of place, a mindset, a lifestyle. After all, wine is supposed to be fun and enhance your happy moments. So don’t think and just drink. It’s Rosé!
About Fiona s.Mak
An international woman of style and taste, Fiona grew up in Hong Kong before attending university in the US. After graduating with a degree in Hospitality Management from Syracuse University, she began her prolific career in the restaurant industry.
Fiona managed a series of reputable establishments such as Morimoto in Philadelphia, Haru Sushi in New York, and most notably Quality Meats, an upscale steakhouse in Manhattan. While there, she trained with the Court of Master Sommelier and earned the Certified Sommelier title.
Her drive to continue learning led her to move across the country and attend the Walla Walla Community College Enology and Viticulture program in 2013. During her studies, she was invited to work at the famed Opus One Winery in Napa Valley for the 2014 Vintage. Then, what began as part time lab work evolved into full time lab management at Artifex Wine Company. Her exposure to winemaking techniques and styles was invaluable due to the nature of the custom crush business which caters to over a dozen clients at once. This, along with her frequent travels to the French Riviera sparked the idea for a unique winery focusing only on Rosé, and SMAK was born.
What can you find Fiona doing when she’s not hustling to get SMAK to the masses? She and her husband Peter have started a Dumpling Company called Wallala Dumplings, an online shop that sells handmade dumplings in Walla Walla.
About Our brand
Ever wondered where our name came from? Fiona wanted to pay homage to her Chinese Heritage and her Chinese name is Sui Wah MAK, so SMAK is a combination of her Initial (S) and her last name (MAK).
Our beautiful labels are designed by Gauge Branding and the label art are hand drawn by the ever talented Margot Van Huijkelom, a Dutch fashion illustrator living in France.
